Object Description

Form

Form: Codex

Support: Parchment, with paper flyleaves. The fourth paper flyleaf at the front has the watermark Briquet 15583 with the date '1399' written beneath it.

Extent:

  • 332 mm x 225 mm (dimensions of all - size of leaves)
  • 252 mm x 154 mm (dimensions of all - size of writing grid)

Foliation and/or Pagination: Foliated in pencil in the top right hand corners of the rectos 1-442. Medieval quire numbering added in the lower margins at the end of each quire, dividing the manuscript into four major parts: fols 14v-171v; fols 179v-295v; fols 306v-380v; fols 388v-437v.

Collation: [iv] + 422 + [v] leaves.

  • Quires: Each quire is mounted onto a separate guard. Several of the folios are now small fragments, so the original number of leaves per quire is not always obvious. The collation as it now appears is: 12, 210, 3-58, 610, 7-118, XII10, 12-148, 1510, 168, 1710, 188, 1910, 2013, 21-278, 285 (stub showing after this quire), 29-318, 326, 338, 349, 35-368, 3711 (although containing several mounted strips), 3812, 399, 4010, 41-438, 449, 458, 462, 47-508, 514, 5217 (but many fragments), 537, 582.

  • Signatures: On fol. 270v is the signature 'xiii'.

Layout description:

  • Layout:
    • Layout type: LO16
    • Columns: 3
    • Written Lines: 57
    • Dimensions: 252 mm x 34 mm; first column - marginalia, glosses etc.
    • Dimensions: 252 mm x 70 mm; second column- first main text column

    • Overview: Fols 1-442. 3 columns, 57 lines. 'Pricking (small slashes) in outer margin and gutter' (Pulsiano 1996, p. 58). The pages are ruled in two main columns of 57 lines, 8 mm apart, but there is also a narrow column in the outer margin, ruled for annotations, that does not extend to the edge of the leaf. The space between this column and the edge of the leaf measures 11 mm, and often ruled in places for other annotations. There are double bounding lines in the inner margin. Initials and headers are done 'in red ink, with blue tracery' (Pulsiano 1996, p. 58). See diagram.

Hand Description

Hand

  • Number of hands: 1 for Old English
  • Summary: One hand wrote two Old English notes in the margins of fols 18r and 74v. Ker notes that the Latin note on fol. 389r and other numerous marginalia in Latin are 'probably in the same hand' as the English notes (1957, p. 331). The note on fol. 18r is smaller and more spindly than that of fol. 74v.
  • Hand: Marginalia
    • Scope: Minor
    • Script: Not specified
    • Ker reference: Ker 262 SC1
    • Summary of the characteristics of the hand: Ker describes it as English in a 'rather current hand' (1957, p. 331).
    • æ is used.
    • Both double- and single-compartment forms of a are used.
    • f is insular.
    • g is insular.
    • k has a square lobe, the ascender is tagged to the left and the left leg has a serif to the right.
    • r is insular.
    • s is insular.
    • þ is used.
    • Two forms of ƿ are used: one form has a square, spiky lobe and the other resembles p, but with a longer ascender.
    • y is dotted.
    • descenders are long and curve to the left at the end, except p and ƿ.

History

Origin

Ker notes that 'the only clue to the history of the manuscript' seems to be the note on fol. 389: 'Magister Willelmus de Weleburne habet quaternum qui hic deest de notulissuper actus [apostolorum]', possibly in the same hand as the English notes (1957, p. 331). Master William may have been a canon of St. Paul's Cathedral in 1237, and may have owned a copy which was in 1295 among the possessions of the cathedral. (See Ker 1957, p. 331 and also Pulsiano 1996, p. 58).
